Willie Carlisle

Willi Carlisle is, according to The Washington Post, “powerful…both down-home and brainy.” With years of collecting folklore, playing or calling square dances, and working in the avant-garde, Willi Carlisle is a multi-faceted writer, performer, and instrumentalist.

With a style forged in the fire of Ozark oldtime music and his ever-growing collection of antique music, Carlisle’s musical stories hoot, stomp, and saunter through joys and troubles uniquely southern and timelessly true. Equally comfortable on banjo, accordion, fiddle, and guitar, Carlisle has earned accolades for his versatility with performances in the UK, Canada, and across the USA, appearing with acts like Dom Flemons, Mary Gauthier,  Los Texmaniacs, Cory Branan, Carson McHone, and more!

While his big frame and expressive voice draw comparison to old balladeers and bluesmen, Willi sings new songs for the oldest reasons: love, heartache, and joy. People who watch and listen will find that he laughs and sheds a tear onstage almost as often as his audiences do, fire- and-brimstone proof of larger-than-life songs and stories.

Grifters and Schills

His was hard rock and heavy metal. Hers was the classic sound of the East Texas piney woods. Theirs was a fiery collision, bearing forth a sound that was at once novel and instantly familiar–high lonesome harmonies with a rock and roll soul.

Behind Grifters & Shills is John and Rebecca Stoll, native Texans who met in a classic rock/blues jam band in 2008. Between them they discovered a magnetic chemistry that manifested not only in music, but in all aspects of their relationship.

When they began playing as a two-piece band, they found a unique voice in the combination of Rebecca’s East Texas vocal stylings and John’s formidable guitar work. They immediately began writing their own songs, while testing the waters of vocal harmonies and adding an array of instrumentation to their arsenal. A typical show will feature a delightful range of electric instruments, including John’s archtop guitar, Rebecca’s bass, a homemade suitcase drum, a couple of cigar box guitars, a handful of harmonicas, and an occasional kazoo.

They call it high lonesome heavy metal, and together, this two-person, dozen-instrument act provides a show full of sound a fury, punctuated with raw, quiet vulnerability, forging new trails and shining new light on familiar ground.

Possessed by Paul James

“…Recognized by the New York Times for one of the best live shows of 2014, Wert exerts a passion for life that transfers to his often-intense concerts as well. But for the “Hurricane” video, he tones things down, finding a peaceful clearing in a forest and only breaking five or six of his fiddle’s bow strings….” – (CMT Edge)

“Urban Roots with the Occasional Rural Punk…folk with a gut” – (RELIX Magazine)

“whether percussively stomping on an old wooden box, sawing a dusty fiddle, picking a banjo, or yelping a song as his head bobs and weaves from a seated position, fans are never under the impression they are seeing and hearing something of this earthly realm. The mix of roots and emotional electricity at a Possessed by Paul James show is akin to a live electric socket missing its cover as stripped wires spark with flickers of enthralling danger…” – (PASTE Magazine)

The Westport Saloon

Located in Kansas City’s historic Westport District, The Westport Saloon has become a midwest haven for the underground. Roots, Honky Tonk, Bluegrass, Blues, Blues Rock, Folk, Rockabilly, and that Twang you live for.

Like the settlers of Westport, we work tirelessly to bring amazing names to our stage. Over the years we have hosted acts such as Wayne “the Train” Hancock, Dale Watson, Moe Brandy, JD Wilkes, Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band, The Goddamn Gallows and more .

Like the settlers of Westport, we are also known for our whiskey. Overtime, and as tastes have changed, we have amassed quite the collection to keep your glass filled and you coming back. Saloons predate prohibition establishments, when drinks were uncomplicated, not pretentious and hearty.  It’s alright to be heavy on the bourbon and Scotch – we don’t judge.
