Matt Mason is an independent guitarist, singer/songwriter, bandleader, sideman, teacher, touring and recording musician living in Oklahoma.
He started playing parties, nightclubs and dances in Bartlesville OK in his mid teens. Throughout multiple recordings and nearly 2000 gigs in 14 states he has continued to be a student and a lover of music. The band Hurricane Mason has proven to be an exceptional vehicle to allow Matt to synthesize, create and perform his take on familiar styles…”progressive, alternative.. bluesrockandcountryroll from the heartland”
Along this musical life’s journey, the path has been extremely trying at times. Yes.. there’s been tragedy, shakeups and breakups and the band lineups have changed over the years, but Matt has been able to dodge most of the punches, keep making music and simply just keep moving forward. This was one of the many lessons instilled in him by his late bass player, mentor and spiritual guide ACE Eversole. His heavy presence continues to be felt nearly 3 years since he passed.
Eversole produced recorded and co-wrote with Mason and some of the results can be heard on what is referred to as the “lost studio album” titled “Be The Wolf” and a vintage performance from the first time the band played with English guitar legend Robin Trower at “Live at Cain’s Ballroom” in 2009. Both recordings will be released and available on the night of 4/20/2019 when the band plays for now the third time with Trower in Tulsa…this time at the larger Brady Theater (soon to be renamed the Tulsa Theater).
The release “Be The Wolf/LIVE at Cain’s Ballroom” by Hurricane Mason is a collection of songs that is the culmination of a long string of performing, recording and refining. One part studio, one part live album, it’s great book of snapshots of the band that Oklahoma based guitarist and singer songwriter Matt Mason had a dream to pursue. During the time that these tracks were written and recorded, the seasoned pro bass player and producer Ace Eversole greatly helped guide this lineup of the band to a more refined musical path and these songs were some of the best. It was during these years the band found lots of work in their home base of Oklahoma and a 5 state region, performing fairs, festivals, clubs both as a headliner and support for national touring acts.
The band Mason had assembled for this lineup still included longtime drummer Shawn Montgomery and together with Eversole’s guidance they continued to help hone and shape the sound of the guitarist’s and songwriter original compositions and creative approaches to familiar songs.
Mason went out on his own for a few years of solo touring and lived thru a disasterous NYE 2014 car accident and recovery . By June 2015 the band had been asked to warm up for British guitar legend Robin Trower at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa for a second time. “Be The Wolf” sessions reconvened at Eversole’s Hideaway Digital studio and the intent was to release the album on the full moon of Fri the 13th of Jan 2017. But it was not to be…Just as the band was firing up the engines in mid 2016 to complete “Be The Wolf” and make it a reality, longtime music writer John Wooley interviewed Matt and Ace for a feature in OKLAHOMA Magazine. By the time the article came out at the end of the summer, Eversole had suddenly passed away after an extended hospital stay. Montgomery and Mason finished out the year very heavy heartedly playing with a variety of bass players covering the low end.
A few more frustrations later…here stands Matt Mason poised to rise from the ashes and rock once again with Robin Trower for the 3rd time… this time it’s at Tulsa’s Historic Brady Theater on Sat 4/20. He’s got a great new band backing him that you will be introduced to when they play live on ABC KTUL Ch 8 “Good Day Tulsa” the morning of 4/18/2019 .
